Posted by: NewsLine 2 months agoTerror is said to wound the brain just as bullets wound the body. Exposure to trauma and events that are extremely tough to handle affect the body chemistry. Hundreds of thousands of troops serving the nation in Iraq and Afghanistan are said to be suffering from major depression or Post-traumatic stress.

I know a few that came back. They have a host of problems and they can become very agressive. This is a big problem, but no one wants to deal with it. The symptoms are insidious at times. There's no physical symptoms. Blood pressure normal, no fever, but seeing these young men before they went and seeing them after they return is the key that tells you something is radically wrong.

Being away from friends and family, doing the country's business, can suck a lot more than many military will admit. Most put on a brave face and do their jobs. The vast majority will never see a shot fired in anger, but the daily grind, the shift work, the hot/cold/dry/wet/dirty/smelly conditions can wear on people.
Please consider adopting a soldier/sailor/airman/marine. Don't let these folks think they're out there alone. Frankly, the information age has closed the gap considerably. E-mail is common, except for some groups. SatPhones and international cell phones really help.
You know what really hurts? Dear John/Jane letters. If you plan to do this, or if you know someone who does, tell them to wait until their loved one gets home. I've lost more people to a broken heart than I ever lost to an injury. I watched a guy get dumped by e-mail, and he was 10,000 miles away from his girlfriend. He didn't even have a way to beg. There's the PTSD you never hear about.

Yeah that was a problem overseas 40 years ago as well.
Guys get a dear john letter and they stop thinking and acting like they are in a battle for their lives. It also affects their buddies in combat as you have to rely on the guys with you to help stay alive.
I wrote this in another post a few months ago. Women/Men who send these letters are responsible for many deaths. Not only of the recipients but also for some of their buddies. I know some guys who got theirs trying to protect a friend who wasn't thinking right after receiving his walking papers from his girl or wife.
War is hell enough without having to figure out what went wrong when you weren't there.

Same old propaganda from the Vietnam era. Btw, what ever happened to all those psychos? Of course, a lot of them were fakes.

What an ass you are. Any idea how many of the homeless you see on the streets are vets?
http://www.nchv.org/background.cfm
Nearly 200,000 vets are homeless on any given night. Nearly half of them are mentally ill.

We are still seeing the ravages of Nam in the survivors and their families. I just don't understand the mentality of you repugs who denigrate the service of our men and women in the military and continue to spout your support for the troops. You support their machoism and the thrill of conquest like a child playing war but don't consider the havoc war has physically and mentally on the troops because you don't care or want to be reminded of their sacrifices. A coward hides at home and lets others fight his causes.

Wolfie- During a war there is a lot of propaganda from usually both sides,(pro war and Anti war) but what I do know is that there are people who do come back who are affected in a very disturbing way. My dad hired a guy to help around the farm when I was a kid and this guy went over in 1939 and came home in 1945, he saw his brother killed and became really good at killing. This guy scared the crap out of me so many times but the thing that scared me the most was the screaming at times during the night or when there was a thunderstorm. Sometimes there would be little things that would set him off and he would just sit and cry. I was never so happy in my life to see a person leave as when he left, he finally ended his nightmare by commiting suicide. Nowdays when I think of him a part of me is still frightened but a part of me feels sorry for him. This guy was no fake, scarey as hell itself.

So many don't know how bad it gets. Yet they think they are qualified to make judgements about the well being and mental health of combat vets.
I wonder how many of them would do a tour of duty and see the insanity and not be affected by it.
I wonder how many would die because they couldn't handle it and f'd up in battle.
How many could be splattered with the flesh and blood of one of your friends and have to keep fighting or die. Then not dream of the horror of it.
Then go home and face his parents and see the sadness that will never leave and live with that for the rest of your life.
I mean these people really have no freaking clue as to what you see and live thru. How much you have to compartmentalise just to function.
Yeah Wolfie, its all fun and games. There is no trauma. Are you human? Or do you just care about money and your pleasure.

All war is hell. From the beginning of time it has been, and people come back mentally wounded from what they've been asked to do and those things they've seen.
But, it's not only war that causes these things to manifest in humans. Don't you think that the daily fear of someone walking into a group and blowing themselves up. Wouldn't you imagine that the daily fear of tanks rolling up in reprisal to the never ending tit for tat that many people on both sides have to endure would cause mental stress? The never ending blame game as each action from one side or the other sets forth a counter reaction and it never ends.
I'd also imagine, that those in counties like the Sudan and others that have seen many murdered and or starved to death are pretty much mentally damaged.
Shouldn't we try to stop not only war but every kind of violence perpetrated on the planet?
