
Health & Fitness – Antioxidants are believed to be effective in helping to prevent cancer, heart disease, stroke and a variety of other ailments by destroying harmful free radicals inside the body. Antioxidant are also linked to anti-aging both inside and outside (when applied to the skin) the body.
I have been taking vitamin supplements for the antioxidants for 25 years now based on a book called "Life Extension: A Practical Scientific Approach" by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. It is available on Amazon for under a buck. I think it really shows how valuable antioxidants can be. I dont know if my experience is common or not, but I have been extremely healthy and have not suffered many of the ailments others of my age group seem to have. This could be from good fortune, good genes, or perhaps from my continued use of supplements (at least thats what I choose to believe).
what this article doesn't tell you is that research has indicated supplemention with vitamin A has been associated with increased risk of cancer, especially lung cancer. However, foods that contain high amounts of vitamin A are great for health. There are many antioxdants other than the ones listed in this article.
Nature might be more complex than the basic science that is described in the article.
While basic science would, as described in the article, suggest that anti-oxidant supplements such as vitamin E would be effective in preventing diseases attributed to oxidative stress, this does not appear to be the case (see Ecdocrinology Practice 12:576 (2006) "Vitamin E in humans: an explanation of clinical trial failure").
The results of a large clinical trial testing the effectiveness of vitamin E supplements on atherosclerosis showed no effect. The results of the study are clear, an explanation for the apparent lack of effect is not at all clear.
While vitamin E and vitamin C can be safely taken in large amounts, the same is NOT true for vitamin A. Vitamin A in large amounts is quite toxic.
The best way to avoid aging is to find away for cells to do a great job of "zeroxing" themselves, like cancer cells do. Cancer cells seem to make perfect copies of themselves. It's those imperfections in the copying process that seem to result in many forms of aging. KEEP the copying perfect, hault aging. So, avoid smoking, booze, and, atomic radiation.
Good article to make people aware of anti-oxidants. There's so much more to tell. There is a group of anti-oxidants that are more powerful than the vitamins listed. They are called OPCs, which include red wine extract, pine bark extract and grape seed extract. I've been using them for several years and they brought down my cholesterol from 280 to 235. I know people who have gotten relief from allergies, arthritis, carpel tunnel, herniated discs. I've heard of people getting relief from fibromyalgia and Lupus, although I haven't met them personally. Great article, keep informing people of the benefits of antioxidants.
