The article touches on it a little, but think that there needs to be an accurate definition of what sleep is.
Though it has its own problems, I would tend to trust numbers from the historical, diary-keeping methodology most.
Also, there is no mention of naps. This is a reasonably common subject in health literature these days. Does taking a nap at mid-day reduce the need for sleep or make whatever sleep time one has better?

R2R -- Think that their procedure was a phone interview; IMHO not as solid technically as a diary.
That having been said, I think that sometimes we tend to be too skeptical. I understand that attitude, being a sort of skeptic myself. Sure the manufacturers would love to see data that showed the need for their product increasing. But equally, I think they'd like to know if the need is decreasing; not much sense in investing effort in products if the demand for them is going in the wrong direction.
Personally, the funding source for the one study was a non-issue to me.

Makes sense and I agree but because I am a skeptic is why I said It wouldn't surprise me.I agree the data doesn't seem to be scientific at all.
Plus with recent articles about skewed anti depressant studies were faked and belief that greed has overwhelmed big sectors of our capitalistic system makes me even yet more skeptical. But a true skeptic will wait for true facts to decide.Skepticism does not bread close mindedness at least in this person but does in many.

I will point out the obvious here: Asking someone over the phone how much sleep they get at night - and getting back an off the cuff answer - is a LOT different from tabulating written records.
