More than 1 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the United States last year, the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, federal health officials said Tuesday. The count broke the single-year record for reported cases of a sexually transmitted disease, which was 1,013,436 cases of gonorrhea, set in 1978.

That was a statement made as a microbiologist working in one of the largest medical microbiology laboratories in the United States. Babies born vaginally to mothers infected with Chlamydia, Gonorrhea or Herpes can get those infections in their eyes on the way out of the birth canal. That is one reason prenatal care is so important, and in my state Gonorrhea and Chlamydia testing of pregnant women is required by law. The rates are higher in areas of depressed socio-economical standing. It's also the reason babies eyes are treated with antibiotic ointment shortly after birth.

But if the man has AIDs, all 14 kids, the 8 women and the man will die. Now there's breeding success! Yes, women are attracted to "dangerous" men who are in good physical condition, a relic of our pre-historic past, just as men are attracted to women who have the characteristics of "good breeders." However, INTELLIGENT human beings realize that our pre-historic drives are misleading in modern times. This is the era of Bill Gates, the pencil necked geek, not the Neanderthal. We soon won't even have low level labor jobs for Neanderthal's, success will be based on IQ. Just the next step in evolution. Of course for it to be complete, the Neanderthanls will have to die out.

I'm not even remotely religious but I believe the major precepts of the western religions are good rules for society to live by. The ancient religious leaders may have believed they were seeing "messages from God" but regardless of their reasons, the practice of monogamy went a long way to making western society so succesful. Less disease, stronger families that are able to take care of their children well past adolescence etc. Love the one you're with doesn't work in the long run but it will take a couple of generations to truly see it. The poetic justice in it all will be that the groups libs hate the most (Mormons, fundamentalist Christians, Orthodox Jews and, yes, Muslims, that will be the survivors of the "Brave New World."

If a man nails 8 women and they produce 14 kids but 5 die from a bad disease that still leaves a net of 9 kids passing on his genes. Well above average. The woman prefers a thug to donate their genes and then wants a nice guy to then form a monogamus relationship so she can secure the entire resources of one man to provide for herself and another mans child.

With this idea you can create another new religion.

People keep forgetting that not that long ago. Kids these ages were getting married and having families. The urge at the young ages is natural. Not saying it is OK to indulge in unsafe sex. Just understand that the urge is there. Just wish these kids understood how devastatng the choices are. It is up to the parents to educate the young men and women to use propper thinking. If you are going to indulge be safe. I mean really at that age ones decisions are being made outside of the parental scope of control.

Well, it's all kind of part and parcel of the same thing, isn't it? If we teach children (and in middle school they are children) to be responsible sexually and that means both for reproductive and health reasons, then it means much more than just giving birth control pills to middle schoolers. It means teaching about responsibility for your sexual actions, whether you choose to have sex or not. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the individual to protect themselves, but it is the responsibility of society to see that the protection is available.

As a parent of teenagers, I have always promoted abstinence, but I also believe that I am a parent--not an owner. Therefore, I am not in control of all that my children do, so I also teach responsibility. This includes birth control/disease control, responsible drinking, etc. When they were younger I would never have imagined telling them to call me for a ride home if they or someone they were with had too much to drink or saying please let me know if you need money for condoms (ugh and more ugh!). Yet, here I am walking this fine line between what is morally and ethically correct and what will save their lives when they make a poor decision. As a parent, you can raise your children to the best of your ability, but once they reach the teenage years they begin to make their own decisions--good, bad, and sometimes immature.

Excellent point, Nostalgia. How do we stop the spread of STD's if we're giving out birth control pills/patches without emphasizing condoms? We need to re-think our sex education programs and offer medical exams/treatment in our schools. And maybe we need to let our children know that their health is more important than being ashamed of how they contracted an illness.

I really do see what SOTM is saying. He's arguing that this is a political discussion rather than discussing the meat of the article, but I disagree.

If there were a long standing debate about whether or not seatbelts saved lives and there were vocal proponents on both sides of the issue, one side suggesting that it violates the personal rights of people to insist upon them wearing seatbelts and another group insisting just as vociferously that society must protect people by insisting they wear seatbelts and then the Federal government mandated that states that did not have seatbelt laws would lose their Federal funding there would be further discussion about the topic.

Now, an article that came out saying that traffic deaths had declined since the introduction of that Federal mandate would have bearing on the issue, would it not? That is the reason why abstinence only has come up based on this article.

no kidding wolfie-good luck in making them all try it and sticking to it, that's why others are trying to protect others from disease and unwanted pregnancies who do not make the right choices. I don't think there is a person here that disagrees with abstinence works and is hoped that our children make that choice, they are just being realistic and wanting to protect them and teaching them how to protect themselves. EVERYONE should know how to do that. But just keep goin down the line and negging everyone, I guess you just don't believe in protection, education or maybe it's just you are not realistic, you aren't being part of the solution, but part of the problem.

Of course, you may not have seen the humor yourself until after you posted it...I don't know. Doesn't really matter. I could have come back with some childish remarks, but why lower myself?

And, now that you've decided to go off on another tangent, I don't worry about the New World Order, I'm just aware of the geopolitical moves being made that could bring such a scenario about. So, play your little game and distract from the fact that you are out of your class when it comes to talking about anything that isn't proving Democrats inferior to Republicans.

Although, I do enjoy your alternate world look at life. It definitely has some threads of truth to it once in awhile. Of course, real life is different than your limiting view.

Maybe I'm not being fair, I don't really know what goes on as far as what those programs offer, except to say don't have sex.

And like I've said before, of course teach your children morals and include your thoughts about pre marital sex ect..those are things your children should be taught from the time you can communicate with them. But I also believe a responsible realistic parent should also discuss how to protect. I mean you just don't tell your kids to not play with matches and expect them to listen, you also say, if you ever do start a fire,(I hope you don't-BUT just in case here are ways to protect yourself from being burnt or from causing damage to others.

Lvr, I am a parent. I am a realistic parent. I understand that abstinence is the moral teaching and that safe sex practices is the health teaching. My kids will get both when the time comes. Moral teaching from us as parents, safe sex teaching from us as parents as well as whatever the school is teaching. Basically, we'll tell them what the right thing to do is, plus we'll tell them the consequences of doing the wrong things.

My point here on this thread is that a whole bunch of people with political axes to grind are using this dubious record as fodder to perpetuate an argument against the usefulness of abstinence programs as tools to curtail teen sex. And there's nothing in the article to support that argument. Nothing at all.

When you say it doesn't "work" for the vast majority of people, what you're really saying is that the vast majority of people CHOOSE to NOT BE abstinent.

You're at least partially right. I don't have those numbers. But, before the abstinence only craze in the early to mid 90's both STD's and pregnancies were on the decline. Since about 2001 they've been on the rise. Is that a coincidence? I don't know, but it does have staggering implications.

Sex has truly been glorified over the last thirty years and for half of that we didn't have abstinence only education at all (except, perhaps in church run schools) and for the other half we have. The second half doesn't seem to be having the effect we were looking for.

Most kids don't make it through high school as virgins. But, I wonder what the numbers were in 1965? Or 1945? or 1885? I don't know? Do you?

I guess that shows lack of intelligence on part for thinking you care.

"...where exactly in this article does it talk about how many of these cases were teenagers getting STDs despite abstinence-only programs? Oh yeah, NO WHERE!"

You are so right. The abstinence programs must be a success like the give money to insurgents program in Iraq. This can only mean that only Democrats, Atheists, and the ignorant poor are driving these numbers! All the good abstinent Republicans and good Christians are obviously immune to such natural desires as sex.

So, logically, for the numbers to increase and for Republicans and Christians to not be a part of these numbers would mean that Republicans and Christians are in the minority of American society. Do you think that is true SOTM?

Now, let's hear that awesome retort to how this is off on another tangent or isn't in the article.

I don't see anything remotely "staggering" as far as anecdotal evidence that abstinence-only programs have created a surge in teen pregnancies or teen STD's. How many abstinence-only programs are there and how many teens do they even impact? Societal factors such as peer pressure and the glorification of sex over marriage have far more to do with teen sex than any alleged "ignorance" of safe-sex practices due to the "impact" of abstinence-only" programs. Any kid that turns on the TV or listens to music is deluged with "SEX SEX SEX". It's a wonder that any kids make it through high school as virgins.

And I don't think it is a matter of politics or religion so much as a matter of what's best for society.

Is it better for us, as a society, to protect our citizens against disease and unwanted pregnancy or is it better for us, as a society, to demand personal responsibility? Now, for me, I think personal responsibility is the way to go, but you can't demand that of someone if you didn't give them the tools to be responsible. Further, that means that if I am responsible for myself then people need to not tell me that I can't marry a guy (as a guy), or that I can't smoke, or that I can't drive without a seatbelt or many other things.

See, these things all tie together. We can't just keep taking one issue and tying it into a knot without looking at all of the other sides of the issue and what else is involved.

This article may not touch on that issue, but the rise in STD's and the prevalence of the idea of abstinence only education are concurrent. In the early 90's, before this current abstinence only craze hit, STD rates were on the decline in the general population. Some of that, of course, was due to the scare of AIDS, but in general, the decline was across the board. After ten years of this idea we are starting to see very large increases in things like teen pregnancies and STD's. Is there a correlation? Maybe not, but the anecdotal evidence is staggering.

I'm sure every parent would love it if their children would wait on sex, having it under all the 'right' conditions. If a parent isn't realistic, doesn't care or is naive, just keep on with that abstinence idea and you might be in for a rude awakening. It's ok to try and let your kids know about what morals they should be expected to follow, but that should be taught along with real protection. It's not a go ahead and have sex, it's more like bottom line 'I don't want you having sex' BUT if something should happen, PLEASE

PLEASE for your own sake, your partners sake, and our sakes...here are the methods of protection, it's a must you use protection. You have a much better chance protecting your child with education of protection then you do by just saying 'NO don't have sex', that's virtually no protection.

I wasn't sure if chlamydia was a bacteria or a virus so I looked it up on wikipedia. It is indeed a bacteria, thus preventable with antibiotics - probably the reasons for all the jokes about "Do you have your penicillin?" in reference to 70s STD education programs.

An interesting tidbit:

"Of equal importance, chlamydia infection of the eye is the most common cause of preventable blindness in the world. Blindness occurs as a complication of trachoma (chlamydia conjunctivitis)."

eek.
