U.S. sets record in sexual disease cases

Health & Fitness – More than 1 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the United States last year, the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, federal health officials said Tuesday. The count broke the single-year record for reported cases of a sexually transmitted disease, which was 1,013,436 cases of gonorrhea, set in 1978.

I really do see what SOTM is saying. He's arguing that this is a political discussion rather than discussing the meat of the article, but I disagree.

If there were a long standing debate about whether or not seatbelts saved lives and there were vocal proponents on both sides of the issue, one side suggesting that it violates the personal rights of people to insist upon them wearing seatbelts and another group insisting just as vociferously that society must protect people by insisting they wear seatbelts and then the Federal government mandated that states that did not have seatbelt laws would lose their Federal funding there would be further discussion about the topic.

Now, an article that came out saying that traffic deaths had declined since the introduction of that Federal mandate would have bearing on the issue, would it not? That is the reason why abstinence only has come up based on this article.

When it mutates into something really deadly, the advantages of exclusive monogamy will become clear.

people have been fornicating outside the marriage for centuries, so far nothing has stopped the lure of cheating on your spouse, not even the threat of AIDS has toned down cheating spouses.Infidelity continues to be the number one cause of divorce.

That's because humans are not naturally monogamous.

I'm not even remotely religious but I believe the major precepts of the western religions are good rules for society to live by. The ancient religious leaders may have believed they were seeing "messages from God" but regardless of their reasons, the practice of monogamy went a long way to making western society so succesful. Less disease, stronger families that are able to take care of their children well past adolescence etc. Love the one you're with doesn't work in the long run but it will take a couple of generations to truly see it. The poetic justice in it all will be that the groups libs hate the most (Mormons, fundamentalist Christians, Orthodox Jews and, yes, Muslims, that will be the survivors of the "Brave New World."

Not at all true. If a man nails 8 women and they produce 14 kids but 5 die from a bad disease that still leaves a net of 9 kids passing on his genes. Well above average. The woman prefers a thug to donate their genes and then wants a nice guy to then form a monogamus relationship so she can secure the entire resources of one man to provide for herself and another mans child.

With this idea you can create another new religion.

But if the man has AIDs, all 14 kids, the 8 women and the man will die. Now there's breeding success! Yes, women are attracted to "dangerous" men who are in good physical condition, a relic of our pre-historic past, just as men are attracted to women who have the characteristics of "good breeders." However, INTELLIGENT human beings realize that our pre-historic drives are misleading in modern times. This is the era of Bill Gates, the pencil necked geek, not the Neanderthal. We soon won't even have low level labor jobs for Neanderthal's, success will be based on IQ. Just the next step in evolution. Of course for it to be complete, the Neanderthanls will have to die out.

The Christians should be proud.

They are the ones fighting condom use and education.

As a parent of teenagers, I have always promoted abstinence, but I also believe that I am a parent--not an owner. Therefore, I am not in control of all that my children do, so I also teach responsibility. This includes birth control/disease control, responsible drinking, etc. When they were younger I would never have imagined telling them to call me for a ride home if they or someone they were with had too much to drink or saying please let me know if you need money for condoms (ugh and more ugh!). Yet, here I am walking this fine line between what is morally and ethically correct and what will save their lives when they make a poor decision. As a parent, you can raise your children to the best of your ability, but once they reach the teenage years they begin to make their own decisions--good, bad, and sometimes immature.

FiggyN; (((Yet, here I am walking this fine line between what is morally and ethically correct and what will save their lives when they make a poor decision.))) the words of a truly concerned parent who lives in the real world.

Yup, as abstinence sex "education" (the word education is used loosely here)has spread and became more prevalent, while comprehensive sex education has been used less, the incidences of sexually transmitted diseases has gone up, I'm shocked. how could the religious (wrong) right be wrong again?

There is nothing more I would like to do than bury my head in the sand and think that my children will never rebel or go against the basic principles of how they were raised. Ahhh, that would be soooo much easier, until the results of my actions became so apparent that I couldn't deceive myself anymore.

"Chlamydia infection rates are more than seven times higher in black women then whites, and more than twice as high in black women than Hispanics. But it's a risk women of all races should consider, CDC officials said.

"If (health care) providers think young women in their practice don't have chlamydia, they should think again," said Dr. Stuart Berman, a CDC epidemiologist.

The gonorrhea story is somewhat different."

Damnit, where is Ron Mexico?! This is his fault!
