"On an average day, nearly 1.2 million teenagers smoked cigarettes, 631,000 drank and 586,000 used marijuana, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found."

"Nearly 50,000 used inhalants, 27,000 used hallucinogens, 13,000 used cocaine and 3,800 used heroin, SAMHSA said in its report."

"In the United States in 2006, one-third of adolescents aged 12 to 17 drank alcohol in the past year, one-fifth used an illicit drug and one-sixth smoked," the report reads.

The report is based on a number of surveys, but mostly the National Survey on Drug Use, which uses in-depth interviews of more than 60,000 people.

our school system did this, instead of spending some extra time with a hyper kid, let put them on drugs to keep them calm. Thank god for my grandmother who said they never had to do this in my days and the kids were just as hyper. She said back then the kids were afraid of the teachers so she made me fear them ever having to call the house, cured my hype in no time.

Thing is we have created this culture of drug use over the counter how long would it take for kids to try other mind changing drugs?

Most people getting "help" get it ONLY as an option to jail, or financial punishment.

And most of these people forced into "help" are there because they got caught, not because they need it. If you look around, the people who really NEED help are locked out of it because the courts push people who don't need it there as punishment.

It's truly hard to realize that most people use substances responsibly, and aren't addicts or problem users.

That said, people under 21 shouldn't be using drugs (tobacco especially) or alcohol at all. It's this pattern that causes life long using.

The intelligence of the kids these days is dropping as low as their jeans are dropping. A lot of them walk around with their jeans below their waists. They are looking more goofy every day.

Maybe it is the place I grew up in comparison to the place I live now but the kid are not even half as wild as the kids I grew up with. Then again, I remeber most people saying that my generation, the 80s, was a lost cause.

Well as teens we seem to think were indestructible and that we can handle it. Unfortunately most continue w/this until they are adults and suddenly experience a major health problem. How do we break down teen arrogance?

At best that's a lie. Most kids who try drugs, or even a lot of drinking tend to grow out of it.

Risky behavior is a characteristic of human adolescents. To try and break that pattern of behavior, like driving fast, drinking or drugs, or dangerous activities is like trying to teach a dog to talk... you can't do it, the species isn't "wired" for it.

MTV doesn't even allow drug references, and certainly doesn't have much going in ways of promoting smoking.

PARENTS and other adults promote this kind of behavior. Where do you think most teens are getting their smokes? their alcohol? Their MONEY to buy ANY of this stuff?
