"The disease is raging now during the wettest time of year for most countries in the region."

"The virus, which has four distinct strains, usually keeps victims bed-ridden for a week with painful flu-like symptoms. About 5 percent of cases develop into the more severe and sometimes fatal hemorrhagic form marked by internal and external bleeding."

"Victims can also die from dehydration if they do not receive prompt treatment, which normally includes bed rest and hydration. Severe cases can require hospitalization."

"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued a dengue outbreak notice that included Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua and Brazil."

What are they going to do about eliminating ponds of mosquito larvae in rivers, or where ever else they breed? They have to go there first to get rid of mounting populations of these mosquito's where they populate.

In Puerto Rico the death toll to date this year is 5, 3 children and 2 adults. The reported cases top the 6,000 mark and counting. There are 4 known strains of dengue, including hemmoragic dengue which can be fatal.

The local State and Municipal Governments have done very little to irradicate the mosquito population, add to that the fact that doctors and health insurance companies are denying people access to blood tests that can identify the presence of dengue in the early stages.

Also horses have been dying,11 so far, apparently infected with the West Nile Fever virus, also carried by mosquitoes. One case of human infection,a child, was diagnosed. The child died and the Health Department was reluctant to admit that she had died from West Nile Fever and not dengue.

The West Nile Fever virus outbreak is a new health threat to the island, these being the first cases ever reported on the island.

Not to diminish what is happening in the Caribbean, but I believe we have a greater imminent threat in the U.S. with brain-eating ameoba being found in warm water lakes throughout the U.S. 6 people have died so far this year with the most recent having been a 14 year old who swam in Lake Havasu and died less than 2 weeks later.
