America's debate over health care and health insurance is heating up -- thanks to the premature start of the presidential campaign and the latest movie from Michael Moore. Given that most politicians and Moore's cast of characters argue Americans should get more health care for less money, there's not so much a debate as a rant.

Personally, I'm glad we are having the debate. It's a shame that we have all these resources dedicated to healthcare, and that 15% of the American population does not have real access to it.

I'd like to see a reasonable solution.

One solution is readily available and could be implemented within a few weeks.

If the cost to our health system of 12M illegals could be diverted to health insurnces, about 40% of our uninsured citizens could be insured.

Enforce our immigration laws and the illegals go home. Then almost half of this problem solves itself.

I hate having a doctor or dentist chosen for me. I will gladly pay out of pocket expenses for the right doctor. Not everyone can do that. It is a shame that insurance companies are so worried about paying the extra expense. If anyone could see any doctor they wanted to I think doctors would be more concerned with their patients health. People usually come and see them because they have to.

Compassion for human beings, needs to definitely be put back into the picture! Insurance companies should not dictate to a doctor how to treat his/her patients!

There should not be one person on this earth without access to affordable healthcare! The longer a person waits to seek healthcare, the worse their conditions usually become, costing everyone more money in the long run!

Why can't we have a civilized world, where humans come first before profit? (We have found money to spend on the wars, we can find money for healthcare for every American!)

As Gordon Grecko said in the movie , "Greed is Good"....

I would add that GREED is now very much the American way. We become more selfish and less selfless everyday. And healthcare money certainly doesn't trickle down...

Here's the hard part. Propaganda. Insurance companies who make BILLIONS off of health care, are NOT going away quietly. Look how EASY it was for bush to give ALL of our tax dollars, via medicare, to big pharma. Look how EASY it was for bush to stop the elderly from looking to Canada & generic drug manufacturers for affordable medicine. And where do Americans look for a balanced assessment of the plans that will be forthcoming? Faux news? CNN? ABC? CBS? MSNBC? How are they doing now?

And IF we're able to keep Congress more balanced, as it is now, where will a plan go with the other 'side' blocking it?

The Neocon Repukes are already gearing up their misinformation campaign. Dissent is disloyalty and treasonous. Wanting our troops home is called non-support, cut 'n run. Those who oppose the war are called surrender monkeys and are terrorist sympathizers. Single payer medical coverage or universal health care is called socialized medicine. Return to regulation on certain economic sectors is communism. Those who criticize the Shrub for bankrupting the country with war and the largest redistribution of wealth in history via tax cuts for the ultra-rich and eliminating services for those stupid poor people who need them are also communists. If you think the "Big Lie" technique that got us into Iraq is something.......You ain't seen nothin' yet. Never, never, never underestimate what despots will do to remain in power. Just like in CA, Republican governors will VETO any health care proposals that cut profits for Big Pharm or big medical insurance brokers.

O-M-G. I'm afraid to go out of the house knowing there are people such as yourself out on the loose. I mean, yours is the most non-sensical piece of diatribe I've ever read here. I . . . I . . . I don't hardly know where to start. A tax cut is redistribution of wealth!? Giving it back to the guy who paid it is redistribution!!!??

And it won't be balanced. CNN apparently has already started in on Michael Moore, and gave some WRONG information. When Blitzer interviewed Moore, Moore chewed Blitzer up and spit him out, for the absolute lack of investigative reporting on this administration, this war, and now the health care crisis. Blitzer admitted they'd given erroneous information on our health care vs other nations, and said they'd retract that, but they have a business to worry about. Huh? I heard it on the radio, as I don't watch 'mainstream' propaganda. It was great.

It is absurd that a country like the United States cannot provide medical care for all of its citizens. Compared to the rest of the world we are not even in the top ten. We need to put politicians on notice. Either you forget about your own personal agendas or we will find someone who will.

I dont know if its absurd.

Its all part of our goverments plan for the survival of the fittest.

Our Republican leaders recognize that America is just too crowded. Their plan is to keep Health care legal but expensive. That way, poeple who just arent puttin enough money into our economy gets expended.

Whut was that prase, "Work makes you free'. Get it? You make enough money, (or you work for the goverment) youre health care is free!

Betcha you didnt know our Republican leaders had a streak of Darwin in em now did ya!

Your never gonna have a health care plan for this nation. Cause ifn you did, then the health care plan for all goverment workers wouldnt seem so special.

The fantastic health care plan the goverment supplies to themselves - to congressmen, all the congressmens assistents, all the goverment lawyers, presdients, supreme court justices and all their assistents, everbody in the military, even that guy who raises and lowers the flag over the white House all day long - they all get the best health care plan in the world.

Now think about it, if they let every Merican have the same plan - all them govermnet workers just wouldnt feel special no more.

your correct about the politician's health insurance but as a former/retired government employee i paid for my insurance (HMO) and it really sucked! and now i am uninsurable for life ins. and health ins. due to military injuries, if it weren't for the V.A. hosp i would have nothing!!! and having only the V.A. is extremly scary because they have very few doctor's and the most of them live in another world. i just thank the good lord that i don't have to worrie about my wife and we have no small children.

If they can fight wars in our name they can certainly spend a fraction of that to keep us in good health after all isnt that why all these wars are fought...so we stay healthy & whole?

I know it's hard. I'm so sorry for your predicament. I'll be joining you in one year when I turn 65, and lose my state retirement benefits, and am forced onto medicare. There's no way I can get insurance on my own, at my age, and with my health conditions. I'm scrambling to get things 'fixed' before I reach 65, and can still get the best medical care for joint replacements. I didn't see this coming. My bad.

I can't believe that people who have served in the military are not granted some sort of exemption, so that they don't have to meet the same eligibility requirements for insurance. The government should be paying for this coverage.

Half the problem with our healthcare system is our expectation. When Blue Shield unleased the whole indemnity concept - meaning, hey pay for doctor visits, etc. - the let the genie out of the bottle.

The biggest step we can make forward is to go back in time. It works like this: Get catastrophic medical/dental coverage. It's inexpensive. Those who can't afford it get it paid by the government. Then - pay as you go for doctor visits, prescriptions, etc. Watch how fast rates come down when pharma and doctors are competing for patients.

The whole idea of co-pay is ridiculous. It's like asking your auto insurance carrier to pay 75% of the cost of a fill-up

Every time this topic comes up I really feel sorry for you down there. One of the above posts stated about being able to choose your own doctor, up here even with a government run plan we do get to choose our own doctors, then if there is a problem we have access to the best specialists that are avaliable. Where I live that means a 2 1/2 hour drive but all you pay for is the gas to and from. We do have some abuses of the system but they are rare. As for the treatment of the ex military in your country that situation really sucks. I hope this issue becomes a major one in the upcoming election, goodluck.

I know a lot of rich people who will not buy the insurance. They think spending $300 dollars a month is like ******ing your money away. They would rather invest their money.

Everything is so unaffordable because everyone wants to make a killing off of it. A small profit is not good enough for anyone anymore.

I think that a three prong approach is necessary. There should be a tax free savings plan for regular medical expenses for most of us; there should be subsidized medical help for the very poor (so we don't put our hospitals out of business with emergency visits that are never paid); and there should be a government run, universal plan for catastrophic illness or injury that would bankrupt families or individuals. This would help responsible corporations that are providing medical insurance for their workers (thus stimulating the economy), and this would reduce the cost of health care for the average American, thus making up for any increase in taxes. I think it would also stop the steady rise of health care costs.

the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program is part of the debate. The idea of giving American people access to the same health plan as members of Congress is politically solvent. If the FEHBP is opened up to the general public, though, it could change the demographics, which could influence premiums and make managing the program costlier."

"The Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan is a system of "managed competition" though which employee benefits are provided to full-time permanent civilian employees of the United States Government. It allows insurance companies and employee associations such as labor unions to develop health, dental, and allied plans to be marketed to governmental employees.

These plans are available to employees during an "open enrollment" once probationary status has been passed by a new employee, during which time the employee, if accepting enrollment, will be covered fully in any plan he or she chooses without limitations regarding "pre-existing conditions". After this, changes can be made only upon a "life-change" event such as marriage, divorce, adoption or birth of a child, or change in employment status of a spouse, or during the annual "open season", during which employees can enroll, disenroll, or change from one plan to another."

Just ask Hillary. She says that she is going to seal the borders, turn back the Bush tax cuts for the "rich", bring down gas prices, give universal health care to all citizens, negoiate with the terriorist, form a committe to study the Road HomeProgram for hurricane victims and appoint Bill a place in diplomacy. And all of this without raising taxes. Wishful thinking Hillary, but it won't work...s....

The wealthy don't want to see their taxes raised to help pay for giving poorer people access to medical care. That's why they berate people like Hillary. Since they can afford the best doctors, they don't want to see a universal health plan for the rest of us because they would no longer have exclusive access to those doctors, they would have to wait in line with the rest of us. That's why the rich deprive the poor of health care by voting Republican so they don't have to stand in line. Either put our congress and senate on Medicare or put us on THEIR plan! I am a Vietnam Era Veteran with Cancer and thanks to the SHRUB, am locked out of the Veterans Hospital because my wife "earns too much income" ($30K per year)as a Librarian thanks to the Republican led Congress of 2002 that "grandfathered" Vets already getting VA Healthcare but locked out sick veterans not "service related" like my Cancer after that date.
