  This is really sad. This comes just after a woman was named the newest victim of the attacks after passing away due to effects of the toxic dust.

    Yes, the White House should have told the EPA to issue a warning that everyone should cease breathing until Ground Zero had been cleaned up. What was the White House THINKING? They should have warned EVERYONE not to breathe until a proper analysis could have been done.

    That George W. Bush. Now he's responsible for even MORE deaths.

      Point taken Saint, but I think this is more evidence of ineptitude at the executive level. Let's not forget that these were questions being asked emmediately after 9/11. first responders and groud help were having trouble breathing, we were told that it wasn't toxic fumes but merely the unpleasant scent of burning flesh, and when asked specifically if the collapse of the buildings could have released desiease causing chemicals the EPA said, "it's A-OK.!" The White House agreed it was safe.

      This is the EPA's job. This is what they do. ANd who was the head at the time, Todd-Whitman, right? Anyway, if we can't trust the govt to inform us of something as simple as air quality, it should have been a omen of the ineptitude to come... Iraq, Katrina, Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Bin Laden...

      They are utterly and entirely inept.

        Come on give the EPA a little bit of a break, I am sure they didn't tell the people it was alright if they DIDN'T think it was alright. Have you ever made a wrong call ? Did the EPA ever have to deal with a situation like this before ? They may have tested other destruction dust before and found nothing. They may have even tested this dust and found nothing. Remember Asbestos no one thought that was toxic at one time Someone made a BAD call and should be reprimanded for it, but I am sure the person that made the call already feels plenty of pain for their decision. hopefully they learn from it and maybe their next call will save thousands of course there won't be any Kudos for them then because people seldom reward good calls and is why many people try to avoid making decisions. Make a wrong call though and People want to HANG you. In todays world "MY BAD" means no big deal, but Your bad means Crucify them, what hypocracy.

            Actually with additional thought on the subject, I think they called the wrong agency which would be expected, Most are trained to Call the EPA for outside disasters and OSHA for inside disasters. However in this case OSHA may have been a better choice, where the "inside outside" RULE of THUMB is normally Correct, OSHA would have been a definately better choice instead. The EPA normally deals with how things react to the enviroment more dealing with VOC's, spill containment and the Like, not that they don't have any experience with dusts and their effect on people, but NOWHERE near the experience that OSHA has. OSHA would more than likely taken samples to a Industrial Hygenist who knows how certain dusts effect people rather than how certain dusts effect the Enviroment.

              if you are claiming that the EPA was unaware that carpet, tiles, plastics, styrofome composites, florescents, etc. under extreme high temperatures would WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY release harmful substances into the air, then i am saying, that if you are right, they are utterly and completely inept.

              personally, i dont think that that could be right, since i dont automatically asociate people who disagree with me politically with being complete morons. and you would need to be a complete moron to work for the EPA and not think that the quantity of chemicals in any buildings of that size, would be extremely harmful under high temperatures.

              i dont think they wanted people to die. in fact i think they wanted them to not die. i just think that they wanted people to volunteer and work to open up wallstreet MORE than they wanted people to not die. and for an president who consistently says his job is to "protect americans," i think that is ineptitude.

          There is no way you can tell anyone who lived through this that the EPA went far enough to test the air quality.I'll make it very simple for those of you who are not from here (NYC) to understand. Imagine standing in a room where people are ripping down old insulation and lathe or plaster from a ceiling and inhaling that debris while doing something strenuous.Imagine on top of that someone blowing sheetrock dust or sand/concrete into that same room.That is what it was like for weeks not days.I have an apartment across the east river in brooklyn and I had tons of soot and debris on my street on all of our cars for days after 9/11.I have lost many friends to this and continue to do so. Right now a buddy has a starfish sized lesion on one of his lungs that he definitely got while he was searching for his brother another fireman in the rubble.All of these men that are dying were healthy and young without any history of lung disease.Tell their families the EPA and the government did enough

        Here is a classic example of how the loony left really think...Here they are blaming Bush again for people breathing in "toxic fumes" after 9/11 and giving the thumb's up for "everything is OK", which I do not believe to be true...Like we have any experience with this kind of catastrophe or what building dust could actually do to a human being...

        Santa, do you blame Bush for your bad hair days, too or wait...What about your flatulence ? Because Bush has his hands in the agriculture market and forcing farmers to grow and harvest more broccoli, so Americans can eat more broccoli and fart more, adding more carbon to our enviroment, accelerating global warming which in turn melts the polar caps up in Antartica causing significant flooding in the US killing thousands of US citizens...All in the hope of blaming the terrorist and starting up another war to end mankind...

        You're assuming they knew it was bad which I doubt. I doubt this is a question of honesty, but of judgement. I belive that someone chose to not error on the side of safety and took more of a risk than they thought they were taking.

          Of course they knew it was bad, the buildings had already been slated for 1 billion dollars worth of asbestos clean up which means showers and hepa systems, why do you think they had to come down? You cannot tell me your agencies are so inept as to not know the dangers and procedures for asbestos removal, wearing a dust mask at ground zero was a freaking joke and i have no idea why the folks in charge decided it was not necessary to take the proper precautions. I think you need to pull your head out of the sand and prepare for all the nasty health consequences to come. When i do simple asbestos removal it is monitored every step of the way and nothing can be reopened to the public until it passes air quality tests. I knew about the asbestos problem in the towers and i am a bloody Canadian so you cannot tell me that the American agencies had no idea what to expect. In 1 day enough protective gear could have been flown in for all rescuers, why was it not?

            The EPA wouldn't have known about the Asbestos since that would be under OSHA jurisdiction. Information sharing between agency's is not a legally simple thing in the United states.

        I'm glad I wasn't there, but if I was, I would have at LEAST tied my shirt around my nose and mouth. The thick dust alone would have prompted that NATURAL REACTION. Or I would have sought shelter somewhere, instead of standing like a dummy, watching the buildings collapse. Like water in a tsunami, the debris and dust had to go SOMEwhere, and anyone with any brains would have walked or ran as far north, away from the buildings, as possible.

        As for the brave people who sought to save lives amid the rubble, again, wouldn't they AT LEAST have covered their faces from the thick dust and smoke? Regardless, those people are heroes, and I feel they should be taken care of, like any war hero.

        As far as the 100's of thousands of people living in the vicinity... I don't know, what are they SUPPOSED to do? Stop breathing? Leave New York? Seems like drastic measures to me. We ALL live with impending disasters - tornados, floods, earthquakes, fires. Accept it.

          you're an idiot. we have an EPA to tell us what we are sopposed to do. were not experts on air quality and toxins so we pay a lot of money into an organization to do it for us. and if its too dangerous to breathe, then yes, we are sopposed to leave New York with the help of FEMA and teh federal government. its not that much to ask to set up for american refuges in the surrounding areas. we do it all the time in other countries.

            Fortunately, 9/11 will, in all probability, NEVER happen again. Meanwhile, an earthquake could devastate L.A. at any moment. Tornados continue to come out of nowhere and level towns in the Midwest. People in Louisiana and Mississippi are STILL dealing with the devastation of Katrina. Not to diminish 9/11, but we ALL continue to live with some sort of impending disaster.

            My point is, stop blaming the EPA, stop blaming the government. WHO could have predicted something like 9/11, or known how to deal with it in the days that followed? NOBODY was thinking straight. It's easy to look back over nearly 6 years and begin to point fingers and lay blame, but in reality, EVERYONE did the best they could to get through it and deal with it.

            As for "not helping a single soul and running away", I don't know what I would have done, had I been there. But I probably would have evacuated the area, like the majority did, and stay out of the way of trained professionals.

      Stop acting like you're stuck on STUPID!! It would've been the right thing to do to let the people KNOW that the air quality was at dangerous levels and, at the very least, to advise them to take precautions such as wearing face masks and eye protection when out and about! WHY COULDN'T THE ADMINISTRATION HAVE AT LEAST DONE THAT??? It was EXTREMELY IRRESPONSIBLE and CALLOUS to give people a false sense of security about their environment, leaving them vulnerable to the effects of breathing air contaminated with many toxins! I hope no one you hold dear is affected now or in the future as a result of this administration's cavalier attitude toward the safety of U.S. citizens.

        Where do YOU live? Are YOU taking precautions for yourself? I suppose YOU continue to gobble fast food, despite all the warnings about how bad it is. Do all these warnings stop you from belching your order into the clown's mouth? NO, of course not. You still do it.

        Do you smoke? Then you are ignoring DECADES of warnings about the health risks. But will you stop from lighting up just one more cigarette? NO, of course not.

        Do you drive a car? Then are you aware that you are belching out toxins that cause cancer? Does that mean we should all step out of our cars and walk everywhere from now on? NO, of course not.

        My point is, we're SURROUNDED by toxins, chemicals, natural disasters - things not good for us. But to go running to the government everytime something goes wrong, crying that "we need help!" "SAVE us!" is placing WAY too much responsibility in the hands of a few people, when the responsibility lies with US.

      Stop breathing sounds about right for the Bush administraion. It certainly would be a lot cheaper than proper attire and ventilation masks for the clean up crew. And the more $$ saved at home means more $$ to go to the war! Thanks for pointing that one out, tienne!

      The EPA did know the downfalls. Asbestos levels at 3 times the safe level, etc. And the downfalls that were unknown were replaced with reassurances by the White House.

      Osama didn't instruct the EPA to mislead the public, telling everyone that it was a-okay to breathe the asbestos-filled air around the area where 2 100-story buildings were pulverized.

      I'm sure Osama would have liked to pressure the EPA to do that, but the White House beat him to it.

    Another conspiracy... the search dogs are dying, the rescue workers are dying, is that all of the evidence there is. The EPA said the air was fine.

    Christie Todd Whitman should be brought to justice for her Crimes, this bunch of GOPers were the worse idea since communism, if the country should reelect a GOP for president to me that would confirm the worlds opinion that we are the worlds stupidest nation.             ok, so all those people who rushed down to ground zero to help are fools. and therefor the government is not responsible for medical bills and desieases that the countries highest environmental expert assured them would not come.

            good plan.

            nice deal POTUS has going. he sits around doing nothing and reading books to little kids. his citizens are left to clean up the mess he was TOLD A MONTH EARLIER was coming. Which they do out of the kindness of their hears and love of country and man.

            Then, when people get worried that maybe it's not healthy to be there, and they start losing volunteers... faced with the fact that the govt may actually have to take care of this (which they still havent done, see: Big Hole In Ground In Financial District) EPA and WH lie to its own citizens and tell them that its safe...

          Who are you saying is indefensible? According to you, the government is supposed to take us all by the hands, like a nursemaid, and warn us that crossing the street is dangerous. Driving a car is dangerous. Breathing smog can kill us. Stepping out of the shower can be a hazard.

                would have cost less than the $430 billion we have spent securing oil in iraq.

                Not that hard to do. It would have cost money though, much easier to just have some people die.

                  What a hypocrite! You say "neither Republican nor Democrat - they're all the bad guys", yet you are CLEARLY a Dum-o-crat. Then you say "give power back to the people!". Well why don't you follow that advice, and allow people to take the initiative to get out of New York if they deem it unsafe - - or not get out of New York if that's what they want to do?

                  Building "temporary housing outside of New York" and making people go there, leaving their homes and jobs behind, isn't exactly "giving power to the people". Why not let them decide for themselves what they want to do, you know, with their OWN LIVES?!

                  You say "government is the bad guys". O.K., well then why would you advocate relying on that same government to take care of "its people"?

                  WE are the government. WE need to take care of ourselves. Take some responsibility yourself.

            well, yes, the govt is sopposed to warn us when things are unsafe. thats why we spend 64 percent of budget on defense. to protect the people, duh.

            if they arent protecting the people then give me back the 20 percent of my taxes you took to do it.

            and more than WARNING us about things that are unsafe, we trust them not to LIE to us when things are...

            9/11, if you dont remember, was the worst attack on american soil, ever. i dont think its out of the question for the US govt, 600 Blln of whose budget goes to defense remeber, to practice a little hands on security in defense of the people who make it great.

            that doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

            perhaps, in our state of national crisis, there might be some contingency plan for warning citizens about unsafe zones? even setting up temporary shelter for those who choose to leave, perhaps.

            Atlantic City is 100 miles away and has enough hotel rooms to house anyone who wants to leave for a little while...

              How about THE PEOPLE HAVE FAILED THEMSELVES? You're assuming that every citizen of New York is an idiot, and wouldn't know whether the air is safe or not. According to you, they're just sitting around, waiting for the government to tell them what to do.

              I remember seeing plenty of people walking around with masks on, days after 9/11. They wisely figured that there were particulates in the air, and took measures. In Los Angeles, on really smoggy days or during our many fires - it's not uncommon to see people walking around with white masks on, so as not to breathe in all the particulates and ashes. Unfortunately it's become a way of life. The air during the Industrial Revolution was ten times WORSE, and people were dying...

              I suppose it's the government's fault for not warning people about Katrina? Well, in fact, they did - DAYS in advance. The smart people got out. The dumbas*es are dead or homeless.

                i lived in LA for 5 years and i can tell you that i have never once seen anyone wearing a mask. i was in santa clarita valley surrounded by fire. it snowed ash for 4 days and i never once saw someone wearing a mask. you're an idiot and a liar.

                and the people of new york wanted to help. they wanted to know that they were safe. so they asked "is this safe so i can help?" the EPA told them yes. and since the govt lied to keep them working, and ultimately they were doing the govt's job in the first place, the govt is responsible for whatever retribution is owed them. its simple.

                and the govt is ersponsible for maknig the death toll of 9/11 higher than it needed to be.

                it seems un arguable.

                but i guess anyone who would blame the poor people who dont have cars or second homes to which to flee Katrina for the storm that killed them or left them homeless is incapable of love for common man or logic.

                blaming the american victims of Katrina for the govt's failure. wow.

                  - DAYS before Katrina struck, the entire area was warned. It was all over the national and local TV news. It was all over the Internet. It was in the papers. Maps, graphs, charts, wind velocity, flood damage predictions. IT WAS ALL THERE. Any reasonable, SANE person with common sense would have vacated the area for a few days, at least until the storm blew through.

                  - Buses and taxis were provided for people who didn't have transportation, or people who were elderly, handicapped or otherwise infirm.

                  - Police scoured neighborhoods with loudspeakers, and knocking door-to-door, DEMANDING that people evacuate.

                  - Hotels, schools, hospitals, aid centers, the FREAKING SUPERDOME - all were opened, free of charge, for shelter, food and medical assistance.

                  Sorry, but anyone who ignored all these warnings, and didn't take advanatage of any of these resources, probably isn't someone who should still be around.

                      No WH contingncy plans drawn up. no WH public announcements made. no WH warnings issued.

                        I never said the White House was issuing hurricane warnings or contingency plans, but then again, they aren't the National Weather Service, either. It's not the JOB of the White House to issue warnings. That's why the warnings were EVERYWHERE ELSE - Media, Internet....well, I don't need to repeat what I've already written.

                        And why do you say George Bush didn't want his vacation interrupted? As I recall, he was there to inspect damage the second day after the storm hit, after emergency crews deemed it safe for the president, his entourage, camera crews, etc. to go into the area.

                        Do you really believe that President Bush is not affected by devastation? Do you really think that, as a human, he feels nothing about human suffering and death? And if so, how do you know this? Did you speak with him personally, or do you just know everything?

                        Your statements are broad, knee-jerk, and typical of someone who just doesn't like this administration.

                          well you recall wrong.

                          the storm made landfall in louisiana on early monday morning (it had hit florida already on thursday), and GW didnt step foot in the state until Friday (5 days after it hi LA and 8 days after it hit FL, which he still did not tour at this time.)

                          you might remember that that was the same day he told "brownie" that he was doing a "heckuva job."

                          what a ****** idiot.

                          i dont know whether he is affected by it or not. im saying he is inept. while the storm was ravaging New Orleans, he was giving two different question and answer sessions on his corporate give away medicare plan in a swing state.

                          so whether hes heartless or just inept, he was certainly unconcerned with katrina.
