Caryl Schivley says her son, Brenton, was always very careful about what he ate -- until last September 1, when he was at a friend's house and took a cookie from a bowl on the kitchen table. "He took a bite of the cookie and he said to his friend, 'I shouldn't have eaten that,'" said his mother.

The wrong food is kind of like sin, isn't it. It kills on the first bite.

More than 80 percent of the deaths were caused by peanuts or tree nuts, such as almonds, cashews and pecans.

I've almost died five times since I turned 20 from Peanuts and at least five times before that. I was so bad that during basic training my reactions caused the USAF to remove all peanut butter from basic training tables.....I have epinephrine in my dresser drawer, my carry babag that I take everywhere, my desk at work, my center console in my car and even at several friends houses. Some of them have kids and have banned peanuts and peanut butter in their house just in case I come over....I always ask at any restaurant, especially because some like to fry in peanut oil. Chinese and Thai restaurants use peanuts a lot. Health food restaurants use peanut oil in salad and cole slaw dressings...it is very dangerous...I read every label on anmything I plan into the house before I buy anything....I try not to eat anything cooked by anyone else....

This is very disturbing. When I was growing up, these types of alergies were nearly unheard of. My grandmother had a theory about the rise of alergies. She said that people were too protected as children. As she said, "Kids don't get dirty anymore. You can't build up any kind of defenses that way!". I can't help but wonder if she is at least partially right. She thought the world was becoming too germophobic, and that led to MORE illnesses. Bless her heart.

Peanut allergies are sooo serious. As are tree nut allergies (allergy to any kind of nut that grows on a tree--doesn't even include peanuts)
