Eating certain foods will make you so hungry that you'll feel hollow inside. We call these "appetite-stimulating foods." These include any food that has been stripped of its fiber such as white bread; foods that turn to sugar quickly in the body such as white potatoes; and foods loaded with sugar, starch, and fat.

    I avoid all of the foods listed except for white potatoes. Baked with their skins, they are both a nutritional value and a nutritional treasure. I've gotten that info on very good authority:

      If I'm not mistaken, potatoes have the highest concentration of potassium per serving of any fruit or vegetable. Even more than broccoli and bananas...

    * White bread

    * White pasta

    * White potatoes

    * Pastries

    * Doughnuts

    * Cookies

    * Cakes, pies, and other sugary baked goods

    * Candy and candy bars

    * Potato chips and other packaged and fried snacks

    Mercy, eating any of the above will do any diet in whether they make you hungry or not!

    I agree with Stephen Johnson though, potatoes aren't just starchy they have loads of potassium, fiber and are very nutritional. I love potatoes and oftentimes just have a baked potato for dinner, i have never noticed that it made me want to raid the fridge!!

        Here is a GREAT pasta, I really tired to give up pastas, and tried numerous brands, whole wheat, whole grain pastas, and this is the best in my opinion. It's not stingy, or grainy and feels and taste most like regular pasta.

        Barilla Plus----

        A multigrain blend made with oat, spelt, barley, lentil, and chickpea flours. Contains flaxseed for added omega-3s. Each serving satisfies nearly one-fifth of your daily value for protein. Taste and texture is most like refined-flour pasta.

        200 cal, 10 g pro, 38 g carb, 1 g fat, 0 g sat fat, 0 mg chol, 4 g fiber, 25 mg sodium*

        Potatoes- I boil (unpeeled), cool, slice and in a frying pan put a little canola oil with onions, some garlic (or powder), pepper, salt. DELICIOUS!

        And most of us have heard the benefits of DARK chocolate- so I see no reason to give up that !!! :-)

        As far as potato chips, Lays light taste most like regular in my opinion, you eat less because they are twice as expensive as the regs.

          Agreed about Barilla Plus being the best common alternative to white pasta. Ronzoni/SanGiorgio Health Harvest has 50% more fiber, but it has less protein, lower quality protein and no Omega 3's. But I eat them both

          And don't get me started about Lindt dark chocolate

        I wouldn't put white potato in the same category than junk food, but there are better alternatives out there. For long term energy, I get my carbs from oatmeal and bananas. Yams are less starchy than white potato and are loaded with vitamin A.

          This is pure bunk. If you overproduce insulin for the amount of sugars in the bloodstream, you are ILL, just as when you underproduce insulin. Weight loss is a SIMPLE MATHEMATICAL EQUATION. Put out more calories than you take in and you will lose weight. These foods should be limited by health-minded individuals because of their poor over-all nutritional value ONLY.

            You have to trial and error with yourself and keep blood records with each physical checkup, I'm an RN and have done some research on nutrition for a number of years. Everyones metabolic system changes and you just have to find the right foods that will help you lose weight, keep it off and feel good at the same time....thats the key.Snacks are fine in moderation, and a few nasty snacks are ok if your health is fine, I've seen diabetics eat pizza, chinese foods and english muffins and ice cream and they were on a standard dose of insulin at nite and they maintained their bloodsugar levels pretty well...things still surprise me every day/

            One of the main problems many people have regarding food is they have forgotten the real prupose of food. It is for the nourishing of the human body. Too many people live to eat instead of the other way around. We spend so much time embellishing the taste of food that we end up substantially increasing the calories instead of the nutrients. Food is for sustaining the human body not increasing its size.

              "Too many people live to eat instead of the other way around"

              Can't we do both? In some prisons, a bland food concoction is fed to prisoners as punishment. The breadlike loaf sustains life, but its insipid taste drives prisoners nuts.

              People like to eat. There's nothing wrong with that. We should try to create tasty alternatives.

              I refuse to believe that most fast food sales are driven by taste, anyway. My money is on portion size and convenience

              I disagree Stephen. Most people who live to eat are overweight and this promotes poor health. If we could created healthy alternatives that don't rely on cholesterol and calorie enhancing additives then I would be all for it.

                Nature has made us enjoy 'refueling' our bodies. there are very few animals on Earth that would not overeat if given the chance. Ironically I think a pig is one of them :-) since we do not have to hunt or really do too much for our food, that is the reason we are overweight..easy access, many choices.

                If food did not taste so good, and nature didn't make us enjoy it so much, eating would be more like a task and not what it is. Plus our human culture revolves around food, we've made it so much more then just refueling our bodies.

                  I am not sure but I think just the opposite is true. Most animals eat until they are full not stuffed.

                    wild animals eat what they can catch, zoo animals and domestic animals eat what you give them, they don't have control over food like humans do...well...like we should anyhow! think of your pet dog, now wouldn't they just love to have table scraps ALL the time? they would become fat, and there are obese pets. Dogs just wouldn't say..oh excuse me, I'm not going to eat that, I'm stuffed, well in the exact same way people do. Just saying if dogs (for example) had choices, it'd be different, same with most animals on Earth.

                        Sometimes I believe that if we we'rent so stressed out, overworked, underpaid, and depressed and just enjoyed those nasty foods and relax, we wouldn't have this overwhelming list of cardiac problems, obesity and high cholesterol, I feel stress increases all these problems 10 fold.

                        I'm 14, I use to be a bit chubby, 130 something pounds, and then I started eating Almonds and just more activity and i lost nearly 25 pounds, and don't scream it's not healthy, I know, but I have like soft kinda stretchy skin now. What gets rid of that? Just time?

                        All my favorite food is on that list, that's all I eat, toast for breakfast, McDonald's for lunch/supper, and maybe another restaurant for a later meal. I weigh 110, Cholesterol about

                        205, BP usually about 105 over 60. I do have some arthritis, but take no meds for anything. I like my diet, I hate salads, fruit, cereal, most meat and veggies, so does my stomach. If I had to change my diet I don't know what I would/could eat.

                          Fix those bad eating habits now while you can, the older you get the worse it'll be. Sheeesss I was 110 when I was 21 and that was a very good year.

                            I had no such illusions. Political junkies - who abound on Nutscape - have no life outside of politics. But they resent people who do, so they try to drag politics into everything. Really sad.

                              I dont know about anybody else, but I am getting tired of "people" telling me what to eat, when to eat and where to go buy it. And I'm not talking about the advertisers. I'm sick of insurance companies overuling what medication my doctor has prescribed for me. I'm tired of the price of gasoline going up and up even though the price per barrell doesn't. I'm tired of being pushed around, bullied and berated. Leave me alone and gimme my donuts and french fries.
