Nov. 26, 2006, 2:37 p.m.This is a good article. Now it's easy to understand why we got mislead into Iraq. It's easy to understand why for years we've railed against things like welfare costs, while ignoring the fact that medicare and social security costs have structurally unbalanced our economy, and will create havoc in a few years as boomers begin to retire. It's easy to understand how tabloids disappeared from the checkout stands after the death of Princess Diana, and now there's more of them than ever. Bottom line, we are an uninformed country that likes to spout off about patriotism and American values while doing nothing to adjust to the dynamics that face our world.

Nov. 26, 2006, 11:47 p.m.I live like this. I am not paranoid of invasion or attack...but Im not so naive as to believe the Islamic war is not on.

Nov. 27, 2006, 1:26 a.m.I disagree with his point about Bird Flu. The trouble is that it is an all or nothing scenario. We might never see a single death from it or we might see hundreds of thousands of deaths. It's better to be prepared on that one.

Nov. 27, 2006, 1:47 a.m.Excellent. The odds that any one of us will be killed by a terrorist are insignificant. So why do we allow an ass like Bush to control our thinking? The article answers the question persuasively.

Nov. 27, 2006, 2:31 a.m.Excellent article. Ive believed for a long time that americans are very uninformed about the daily things that negatively effect their lives. Most Americans should hang there head in shame at how violent the country is. But you cant tell the average american that...most think that amount violence, poverty, drug use, and illiteracy is normal, because most have never left the country. But thats how the leadership likes it. All in all, I gotta give Bush and company respect in how they know how to play on the average americans fears. Right or wrong, thats a talent.

Nov. 27, 2006, 7:07 a.m.Good article. Locally the utility company dumps thousands of lbs of mercury in the air monthly. This area [western NY] has the highest incidence of cancer, MS, etc than anywhere in the US, all connected to the mercury [according to EPA]. Tens of thousands die painful deaths each year due to mercury poisoning. And the health care costs continue to rise. The utility is owned by a foreign country.
