Health & Fitness – The short answer is no.
For the record, "research" is reading older works to get information for forming a hypothesis and/or evaluating the results of an experiment to develop an appropriate conclusion. It is the most commonly skipped and poorly done step of the "Scientific Method". Also certain parts of the argument are contradictory. Caffiene drinkers are only losing about 2/3 of the water they drink, and those who drink such beverages retain as much fluid as those drinking an identical weight of water. This article too, fits the definition of an urban myth.
TCMYoda:"Caffiene drinkers are only losing about 2/3 of the water they drink, and those who drink such beverages retain as much fluid as those drinking an identical weight of water."
You might want to re-read the article. This is what it actually says: "The average person retains about half to two-thirds the amount of fluid taken in by consuming these types of beverages, and those who regularly consume caffeinated drinks retain even more:"
Oh, thank God. I am trying to loose weight and improve my health. I have been attempting to drink 8 glasses of water a day and feel terrible! I am running to bathroom CONSTANTLY and I feel bloated and full. I am glad that my coffee counts in my favor, at least a little. I am going to try 4 glasses a day and see how I feel.
Here's a little correction for those who might think otherwise:
Your body (eventually) gets rid of (for all practical purposes) 100% of the water you take in. Think about it. If you take in only 4 cups of water every day, and whizz/sweat out only 95%, in only 20 days you would mass an additional 4 cups of water. After a year you would be bloated beyond belief. The only quantity of water you REALLY retain is whatever amount might be stored in additional fat/muscle/blood volume you can account for by permanent weight gain.
Water is good for you. I don't know if you really need 8 glasses of water. I figure that if I drink a few pints a day, add in a few cups of coffee or a couple of glasses of iced tea then I am doing OK. I am sure that one's size has something to do with it too. I can't see a 105 lb woman needing the same as a 300 lb man.
