Aug. 27, 2006, 10:40 p.m.OK -- so the salads compare fat-wise with a BigMac. What about vitamins and other nutrients? How do they compare in that regard? Seems like that should have been addressed as well.

Aug. 28, 2006, 10:39 a.m.Hmm...So, a salad covered in fried chicken strips, bacon and ranch dressing is not healthy? Darn, you McDonald's, next you will be telling vegetables boiled in oil may cause me to 'gain weight'. I need a lawyer!

Aug. 28, 2006, 1:18 p.m.This isn't new news. I'm 14 and I've known this since I was pretty young. Shame others didn't.

Aug. 28, 2006, 2:58 p.m.Firstly, I wouldn't say that "salad" is the same as "junk food."
Secondly, MacDonald's salads use grilled chicken strips which are not as fattening as fried.
Thirdly, growing your own garden or eating at home isn't gonna do SQUAT. If I made a salad at home it might turn out to be exactly like the salad MacDonalds is selling.
So, what next? Will I be sued for making myself a salad that's not healthy enough?
Finally, I'm nearly 50 y.o., I'm 6'2", I'm 190lbs, and I can run a mile in 5 minutes and can bench 200lbs AND I've eaten at MacDonalds my entire life.
Anyone who pooh-poohs MacDonalds and compare it so smoking should get a grip on reality.

Glad to hear you are in such good shape. It sounds like you are active which no doubt contributes to your good health.
The article isn't about suing McDonald's for it's fattening food, though that is where this thread is steering. The point seems to be that McDonald's in trying to promote "heathier" choices, but is more interested in the marketing than in the nutrition of their salads. It's PR damage-control, and it does as much good as their new soccer-playing Ronald McDonald does for childhood obesity.
McDonald's isn't the only restaraunt that fattens up their salads for no apparent reason. Whether dining out or at home, it's always good to pay attention to nutrition vs. a perception of what is healthy.
The question left unanswered by the article is, who is eating McDonald's salads?

Aug. 28, 2006, 4:16 p.m.Who eats McDonald's salads? I do. I pick them up for lunch as well as the salads from Burger King and Wendy's. The only difference is that I take them to the office and use a fat-free dressing. Now all I need is for someone to tell me that fat-free dressings are a danger to my health.

Aug. 28, 2006, 4:57 p.m.Its just another attempt to go after big business, any big business. Than people complain, all the jobs are going over-sees. Who wants to deal with all the crap of being successful in this country.
News flash-McDonald's is not the place to go for nutrition, smoking is bad for your lungs, alcohol is bad for everything, Walmart is pure evil, oil companies pollute the environment, lawyers are scum, pharmaceutical companies should be shut down cause they want to make a profit, and are in the pockets of the evil republicans. Hey I know lets shut all of these industries down, or lets put so many government constraints that it gets to costly to do business in the US, and lets make sure we don't limit W/C claims to make sure those evil Insurance companies can raise there rates to such a ridiculous amount that companies close down cause they can't pay the premium. Have I left anything out.
Oh yea, why are all the jobs going over-seas? Must be Bush's fault.

Thanks for your reply. I guess just because I go there for the burgers doesn't mean everyone does. It goes to show that there are smart ways to eat at the major chains.

wtf? Must be the trans fats in those cookies.

Aug. 28, 2006, 5:44 p.m.What I found amusing is that they singled out the BLT from Wendy's.
I work at Wendy's. the most fattening salad we have is the Southwest Taco salad *which is mostly the dressing. That dressing has more fat and calories than some of the other salads!!*

Aug. 28, 2006, 6:55 p.m.BlankFrank -- good points. I'm interested to know the reason behind your implication that MacD's fattens up their salads for no apparent reason. I can think of a few reasons to add fat to food, but I really don't think a major chain would add fat to food for NO reason. Fat isn't free, you know (no pun intended). So, if McD's was adding fat for no reason, that's the same as saying they're spending money for no reason.
I don't know a whole lot about McD's but I can tell you that they certainly would not spend money for no reason at all.

Aug. 28, 2006, 7:37 p.m.My guess as to why they load the salads with fat is because they think they are adding value and making it more appealing to their core customers. You're right, that fat isn't free, but dried bacon and Thousand Island dressing is pretty close.

Aug. 28, 2006, 7:51 p.m.BlankFrank -- good points.
My bet is that Bacon and Thousand Island dressing is added for better taste -- not exactly a small reason.
